No rule says you can't swap out a meal (or a big cheeseburger) for one of these sippable meals from Dr. Oz. 

I don't even need another reason to LOVE Skinny Ms. but I'm digging the way she gives the benefits behind the ingredient choices for this detox juice recipe. 

I add a few drops of doTERRA cilantro oil to the finished product  for the added benefits of removing mercury and other harmful minerals from the body. 


Fresh pressed, organic juice is my first choice when I'm going serious detox. Makes my blood do the happy dance. Oh my and what to do with the leftover pomegranate juice. Ok, maybe forget the detox part for just a quick second but I adore Izy and thought that was THE cutest idea. 

Green tea has great health benefits for your digestive system, too. I love web purchases with my health in mind that end up helping me out on the holiday shopping side of things as well. Score.


And my all time fail safe go to recipe for a detox is the cabbage soup recipe

Seriously.  I don't measure or count calories when I have this on my stove. {Tip: simmer onions in broth until desired doneness. Once you add the tomatoes to a recipe...your onions will stay in their current state of doneness.} Change it up. I add carrots, a squeeze of lemon, a splash of flavored balsamic, green beans, celery, red pepper flakes...common sense will tell you that as long as you keep the potatoes, corn, bread, and cheeses out of this recipe....really, it's vegetables. Yum. Good for you.

Gotta love The King. And since I was just in Sin City visiting my parents, what a more fitting (and dee-lish) way to pay tribute to Elvis than with this week's smoothie. Uh-huh, you got that right - peanut butter and banana.

I did cross a major hurdle that might not be so challenging to some but for me it was a very empowering experience.  Drumroll here - I worked out in foreign territory way out of my comfort zone AND managed to drop 3 pounds in Las Vegas! Good grief. Someone give that girl a cheeseburger already. 

On the slim chance (haha I got a million of 'em, hurry back)  that I haven't lost you yet...zzzzzzzz

here's how I did it:

I was in Vegas for about 10 days. First morning I woke up and laced my trusty sneakers and headed out for a walk. Nothing exciting but it was the habit I was creating and DISCIPLINE to tell my body this felt good. And seriously it did. Vegas has so many beautiful places but it's also easy to get swept up in the buffets and bright lights. 

First stop is usually TJ's or Sprouts for some healthy reserves to keep around the house. When I'm away from my BlendTec I rely on finding some green juice made with the least amount of sugar possible. Heck - no rule says you can't have a salad for breakfast. Toss a few pear slices, some raw nuts and call it good.

It's Vegas - anything goes. 


I tried to get moving at least every other morning. My routine was pretty consistent and quite entertaining. I ended up being an undercover agent in my mom's neighborhood. I was debriefed the SECOND I returned.

"What's going on over at Crazy Mary's house? I saw cars."

Uh, the maids were there, Ma.  

"I saw Skinny Pete outside - I hope you didn't talk to him. Did you? You'll be trapped for hours."  

No, didn't stop to chat because I was SWEATING, Ma, not strolling and gathering intel. 


A 2 mile run with some intervals along the way. I added walking lunges and picked strategic places to catch my breath. 


Bench dips, jacknives (most effective yet hated), plank push ups 

(40 of each in 4 sets of 10)


gave me a great view.

entire workout only took about 45 minutes each morning

For some reason, the buffets have lost their siren effect on my brain. Helloooo, maybe it was the exercise and healthy intentions I set each morning. Aha, I'm starting to see a pattern here.  Needless to say, buffets are a BIG part of the daily routine when I visit. I stuck to eggs, steamed veggies, salads and clean protein (steamed shrimp, sliced turkey, baked chicken) and avoided saucy, creamy, gooey creations. I did have 2 cheats during the week: a bagel with lox & cream cheese and a half order of french toast with bacon.

My taste buds (and my butt) were not disappointed.

Self control feels fanFREAKINtastic

oh please, who am I kidding, someone needs to mention self control to the slot machines. I know I'm not supposed to have hate in my heart. (it takes up room where goodness cannot live, right?)


I hated those one-armed bandits this trip.

I felt like I was in 4th grade and spent all my allowance on something shiny and plastic.

It breaks. I'm out. 


Good thing I have Elvis to remind me things will be ok.

I added chai spices (grated ginger, cardamom & a vanilla bean) but really based my fun project on the recipe here

Laundry was goin', pear butter was bubblin' , nobody had fallen off my massage table...

my week was coming together and life was good.

I came up with an apple pie smoothie concoction and looked to the internet for validation - duhhh, there's like a gatrillion apple pie smoothie recipes. 

Look at all those people that think just like me!

I am one of those weird Americans that doesn't like apple pie.  

(oh how I am wishing for the teeny tiny font right now. ) 

I can't believe I said that out loud to my internet homegirls.  


Sorrrreeee. Excommunicate me now and get it over with. 

I don't like cake to touch the ice cream. *gag emoji NOW*

My big fat workout was a 2 mile run

50 high knees

50 jumping jacks

50 crunches

50 push ups (5 sets of 10 of those bitches)  

50 walking lunges

( I wish my driveway wasn't so loooong. More whining from Goldilocks) 

Who are we kidding here?

Goldi is so far past whining and is now blubbering like the new girl discovering an orange jumpsuit for the first time.

Holy COW that was a SweatFest!! 

Smoothie Reward and hell yes I added whipped cream.

1 C almond milk

2 C ice cubes

1 apple

1 scoop vanilla protein

3 T oats

1 tsp cinnamon

1/4 tsp EACH nutmeg & cloves

1 T chopped walnuts for topping AFTER you glop the whip cream on it.  

Mix all ingredients except nuts & whipped cream. Pour it in a big festive glass jar and lovingly replenish your body's nutritional needs.

(now doesn't that sound sane, rational & well thought out?)  

It also sounds like more than 'drop and gimme 20'   Someone lied.

But in a good way.

Howdy from Texas! I hope everyone is having a great morning.

I also hope you all have cake for breakfast.

Whoever invented a cup of cake is my hero.

I like a cup of cake for breakfast about as much as I like a bathtub full of chocolate. 


Birthday festivities commenced yesterday watching football with friends at THE RUSTY BEAGLE. What's not to love when you kick off your birthday weekend with fried pickles and a wing sampler?

ugh I haaate this part....the internet can be a place of fantasy where everything looks so colorful and prittee so I feel I must confess something you may not know about me...

according to mi familia my birthday celebration lasts for the whole month of October.  

Okayyyy, confession over. Now back to me...

I've never done anything like this so I thought it would be fun to set some goals. No, not that I've never set goals on my birthday...but that I've never deliberately set goals. *gasp* you say?

Yes, really, I say.

With that being said, I figured it's probably a good idea (according to all the goal setting experts I checked with) to establish goals for some personal & professional growth, financial AND health improvements in order to be a more well rounded (oh, yes please), productive and happy member of society.

Here goes. Welcome to my year.  


  1. Adopt a rescue animal. My 3 dogs, 2 horses and barn kitty might be getting lonely. I've heard Russian Blue cats are most excellent and don't shed. That would probably be the best inside cat to sneak past my husband. He travels; he'll never notice. 
  2. Crochet a whole afghan. I say it that way because of the projects with half of the fringe, the new popcorn stitch I invented on one end of a scarf, the pot holders still looking for a kitchen to call home...Come to find out - actually finishing what you start is good for self esteem. New Mantra "I am not a quitter" 
  3. As a part of being more financially responsible and taking an interest in my retirement plan I resolve to: Give up using credit cards. Even for the "save 15% MORE TODAY RIGHT NOWWWW"  Good Bye impulse shopping - I must quit you.  
  4. MLD training In Houston in May. Happy Mother's Day to me.  
  5. Paint the hallway bath a 'refreshingly light shade of sea spray green invoking the freedom and mysteries of the sea'. Sounds true in my head. If you find that color beam it on over.   In the meantime any color described as fresh, airy & innocent belongs in the bathroom. Like nothin else....
  6. Vote responsibly. I'll start by learning the names & positions of "prominent politicians". Good politics begin at I suggest no whining or complaining on a national level if we haven't even made an attempt to be effective down the street. Guilty. 
  7. Overcome my fear of yeast. I will triumph  with these cinnamon rolls to start.
  8. Run a 5K. Without stopping. That may sound laughable to some, but....can I just sayyyyy...a manageable goal to me is the fact that since I can't even run .75 miles without stopping (or hurling) I am imagining it will feel great to go outside and run for 30 minutes simply because it FEELS GOOD. I lost one of the best friends I've ever had last year to pancreatic cancer and my dad lives with kidney failure and chemotherapy for lung cancer....Not to mention the fact that we all are touched somehow by &^%^$# cancer.  What better way to honor our loved ones than by living a healthy life & using our bodies as God intended. Boo on you, cancer, I say.
  9. Do 15 boy push-ups. Without crying. 
  10. Count my blessings everyday.

As cliche as this may sound, I truly believe in the magical benefits of gratitude. Every single thing every single day has value and goodness. If you are reading this post then believe me there are millions of people that would trade places with you in a heartbeat. For a hot shower - for indoor plumbing - for a safe street where kids can play - for religious freedom - for choices.

Share the wealth AND the love. Smile at strangers. Eat cupcakes for breakfast. Be a thoughtful driver. And never ever miss the opportunity to make the world a better place. You are loved and have value beyond belief.

Totally had a Mr. Rogers kind of day.  


Called a friend and we met to explore a new hiking trail. It's that last little gravel parking lot on the right heading north on 2499 before the big bridge into Corinth/Denton. We parked and then walked back under the road and found an amazing trail. 3.75 miles ONE WAY. Pack some flares, take a lunch, toss out breadcrumbs, and tell your family where you are in case they have to send in search and rescue. 

One of the greatest things about today is that it was vanilla. Halloween parties, travel coming up, the holidays...busy, busy getting ready to hit.

I needed a nice walk in nature with a favorite friend and no drama (read - I didn't fall down because she's hilarious and we laughed ourselves blind). The only drama is I'm still after her peanut butter brownie recipe. Stay tuned, my friends.

Everyone is all about THE GREAT PUMPKIN. No, not me. I skip pumpkins and go straight for the hard stuff. I almost hung my stocking up by the chimney with care this was soooo good.  Slightly calorie DENSE so a little goes a long way. I had 6 ounces for breakfast and 2 Cups left over. Afternoon snack after the (ahem- 300 calorie burn in the forest - hold your applause) trail hike AND enough for breakfast tomorrow.  DOOMSDAY PREPPERS wants me on the show. Speaking of which...have you seen that? One word -  "crazy". As in a couple kerosene cans from a full generator. (I can't use one word to describe anything.) You should know that by now. I'm an Eskimo. I have a million words for snow.

1 C water

1 banana

1 C frozen pineapple chunks

10-12 walnuts & almonds tossed in

1 big scoop vanilla  PROTEIN POWDER  I get mine at Sprouts

2 tsp vanilla

1 tsp ea. cardamom & cinnamon

Okayyyyy already. I get it. I've finally relinquished hold on the A/C. I shouldn't even admit that but I am SO HOT. Not in the cougar the hot flash from hell welcome to my life way. So now that you have that critical ( and yet so fascinating) background on me and we have a starting place - hellooooo - you can see why this fabulous weather with all my doors and windows open is my favorite time of year in Texas.

Fall weather lasts about the lifespan of a mosquito so try not to blink a lot during the month of October.  

  1. One of my favorite things about people is their attitude. A great attitude can rock no make up sweat pants day with Cheetos in your cart at the store when you run into Perfect Mom. (This will also blow Cougar Theory straight outta the water so tread lightly and don't play that card often) How many things on THIS LIST are part of your day? If you want to understand more about the physiological response involved in the process and you also want to be as Happy As A Pig.....awesome. They both mention singing. Go figure. 
  2. Pie is a no-brainer in the fall. Period. Summer - ice cream. Fall - pies. *big sigh emoji here*  Why people want to fight against nature is beyond me....My Grandma Amsberry taught me to make pie crusts & pies before I even knew there was such a thing as a recipe. I can still hear her asking me if I could "feel it". She made me close my eyes and work that dough. Try it. It's a great tip for working pie dough LESS. You can feel it come together a lot quicker than you can see it for some reason. Of course that little trick doesn't work with meringue and the high speed mixer so don't be a hero in the kitchen. I refer again and again to this blogMy disclaimer in this case will be "A homemade chicken pot pie completely from scratch will be our Thanksgiving dinner." I'm not a hero in the kitchen either. I just want no one to need a tetanus shot in here or get food poisoning. My simple goal after a meal - Everybody lives. Now for all y'all feeling tricked by a link to a chicken pie and not a REEEAAALLL pie, here's SOME LOVIN' for ya. 
  3. I know I said no PUMPKIN until November but this guy kills me! If the most clever name for a blog doesn't do it for you then I got nothin'. But seriously, think about it...marshmallows roasting outside in the fire pit, football games, sweaters...don't EVEN get me started. And now my gifting for the season is blown since all my friends know what to expect. Cute, tidy jars bursting with that deelish pumpkin butter. No way. Yes, way. 
  4. FALL GARDENING. Yes, that totally deserved all caps for many many many reasons. The first & most pure of heart is the simple reason that I love having my hands in the dirt. It feels good. (Plus when I go right inside and stick them in a bowl of pie dough with my eyes closed.....bam! chocolate pie crust!) oh not really not really. This is the paragraph that requires things to get repeated over and over. and over. Another reason I simply had to use all caps is becuzzzzz when I moved to Texas from Colorado my gardening learning curve was so high. SO HIGH. Then I figured out that spring and fall here are like summer in CO and my life became a lot simpler. I plant things in the fall to carry over winter that my BFF in C Springs planted in her garden in the spring that now have snowflakes on them and they're done. Dead. Frozen. So face for her. I win. Except in English class for run-on sentences. F. 

Last but not least favorite has got to be Morning Walks. Peaceful. Quiet. Unless a rooster lives across the street from you.  I'm fortunate that a lot of my work occurs in the afternoons and evenings. I've kind of accidentally turned into a 2nd shift person. So when I walk or workout in the mornings A. it's light out so coyotes don't kill me and drag my carcass into the woods. B. I'm not panting behind a school bus. C. Most of my normal neighbors have gone to work so they don't see me tripping up the street. WIn.

New Books.

Sometimes books that hurt my brain & stretch my heart are good things. 

Except books about hooking up electronics. Things that involve red, yellow & white cords, AV/Input, Audio..... 

NO.  No means no.

I have a hard enough time with 3 remotes. Back in my day when we walked a mile to school uphill in the snow with pants under our dresses (thanks mom for catapulting me to the forefront of middle school fashion) ....we actually had to GET UP and turn a knob on the telly. Cable? No. Again, no. 3 channels.  Life was easy.

Just one of the amazing things found in the south is sweet potato pie. You may recall my pumpkin boycott  mentioned previously. Soooo, since I was bound and determined not to use pumpkin in my smoothies yet....

I do. I want to.

I was the 6th grade spelling bee champ when we lived in Germany and got a ball point pen for being the WINNER. I'm almost positive that potatoe or tomatoe was NOT my word. Just so you aren't intimidated by my coolness, I need to tell you that same year I also cried when the choir teacher wouldn't let me be in choir. We won't go there today. But I do hope all her children were born tone deaf and sing at the top of their lungs IN THE CAR ALL THE WAY TO THE POST OFFICE ON APRIL 15th.

One thing I DO want to know is where are all the real life educational blog pics?

Like is it that important  to use the LID on the blender? It's important. 


Sweet Potato Pie Smoothie 

(makes 2 generously filled pint jars)  

8 oz Almond Milk

4 oz Sweet Potato Puree

1 banana

2 T peanut butter

4 large curly crispy Kale leaves

2 tsp cinnamon

2 tsp vanilla

1 or 2 C Ice Cubes

Whirl away your troubles in the blender and plant your face in this. 

Probably my favorite smoothie to date. How can kale taste like dessert? Trust me.

If you really can't stand the thought of drinking something green

(very pale 'maybe baby' green in this case) 

then add the missing PIE ingredient  - whip cream for camouflage. 

This IS the south after all. We camouflage anything that stands still.

I knowwww that's not a popular opinion but I'm giving props to the apple.  

Pumpkins = pumpkin pie = Thanksgiving = November. Rules, people, rules.

  1. I made this APPLE BREAD.   It lasted less than 24 hours in my house. Super quick and easy. The only thing I did differently was to drizzle  melted butter mixed with brown sugar & vanilla over the whole masterpiece before baking. As if canned biscuits slathered in vanilla glaze needed a little oomph. It's never enough, she sighed. Never enough. 
  2. Speaking of never enough as in never enough TIME. Puh-leeeze. Where does it go? Well, half my life now goes to Scandal & Netflix thanks to my best frenemy. Pass the guacamole. I can't take it. Thankfully I can check in for a quick 12 minute workout in between episodes.  The Fittnessista has another insane (in a good way - not the hug myself jacket way) way to sneak in some quick EFFECTIVE (yowza) cardio. 
  3. As a massage therapist, I've used all 3 of these products. Love them! Love love love. Grandpa's Garden has these great microwaveable mini blankets. A friend going through the chills of chemo showed me hers. Awesome to lay on, warm your couch or add a nice, comforting warmth to your lap or chest. Heads up! They have a great sensory integration application. Very soothing & grounding.  Mother Earth Pillows carries other products my clients love. Crazy when October brings cooler weather and I bundle my little massage peeps with hand warmer mitten things, heart warmers for the chest.....aaahhhh. I wish I could work 24/7. Ok, calm down, crazy girl, you do not. I don't. I don't wish that but I DO love my job.  And...something I use DAILY, every day, all day till the midnight hour is this magical water bag.  I do not know how my friends at Body Logic in Dallas do it, but I swear when I order something it's on my doorstep within a couple days. Phone calls, subbing items out of stock for a more deluxe version at no extra cost, personalized's like they KNOW ME or something. (and they don't, I'm kidding, but they do make me feel like a rock star) Hey, look, #1 - 1 favorite thing,  #2 - 2 favs, #3 - wow! 3 favorites...The party is O.V.E.R.
  4. Another Friday Fav.  Souper McSouperson.   My newsletter this month includes a really creamy, comforting bowl of well, basically, warm coconut milk with some veggies tossed in. But when it comes to REAL food bloggers on their A Game - I respect the greatness. Follow me to the Mother Ship of SoupI want to be her neighbor and pretend to be sick. All the time. Phone rings, "Hey, Karen, it's me. I just stepped on a Lego. Can I have some soup, please?"  I'm SO doing that.  Please let me know your favorites and be sure to let Karen know, too. (That increases my odds of getting free soup)

Literally fly off the shelves when she gets her shipment in.  Contrary to popular belief, yoga chicks in stretchy pants DO kick and pull hair when these quilts come in. 



I am loving a lot of things today. Fridays are awesome.

And here's another reason why:  

"want you to know how much the holding of poses in yin helped for my biopsy. Had to be completely still. For 30 minutes. Laying down. Have done harder yin poses than that. Slept thru it. The practice of yoga and all it entails made a big difference."  

I woke up to that text from a student today and my heart filled with gratitude. Gratitude for the teacher that taught me so I could teach someone else. When you share something and see it have positive applications in real life scary makes your day. Because it's not about the teacher - it's about the student. Whoot! You go, girl! Rock that big yoga brain. 

Since my middle name is Irreverent  -  hopefully I get to see her stitches...

Never enough. Someone just doesn't know when to stop. 



Friday Favs....

Yo, Friday, we got this.


Something friendly about a Friday. Like all your hard work is noticed when Friendly Friday rolls around and says, "I'm putting my feet on the furniture." 

Living fearlessly is like being a kid - with grown-up privileges.  

If you're like me the grown-up part never enters the equation. The Man came home from Important Land and made a quick run down the street to put gas (?) in the truck.

Him: Wow! Did you know there wasn't any oil in the truck?

Me: Wow! Olive or coconut? 

Not funny.

I don't know of what he speaks, I only know I wasn't contributing to that conversation.

Listen, kids. Hear that? Yep - my brain exploded. But in a good way.

Kayyyy. The best way to shine is from within. This juice is guaranteed to do just that. I should name it Joy Juice - it gets you that shiny. Unfortunately, it doesn't photograph well. I tried everything. The frothy top view, nestled in with some window sill plants for the reinforced visual of "nature. good. green. good"

(Vit C in the tomatoes helps the body absorb calcium supplied in the greens)

Very intense & earthy flavor to this juice. I had a glass before dinner as an afternoon pick me up and felt like I swallowed a glo-stick.

Monday Motivation

Today's motivation is about the power of love. The way love liberates.

It liberates you and those around you. 

I spent the weekend learning compassionate, safe, sound and medically based methods for teaching yoga to cancer patients & survivors.  

This is where I am today. Love has been coming out of my eyeballs like water. 

I hope it never runs dry.  

  • If you have legs - move them
  • If you have lungs - stretch them
  • If you have arms - hug someone
  • If you have a heart - make it pound so you can feel it.  

And the love the world so hard they can feel it in China.

And Syria.  

God Bless you all with abundance in your lives & hearts

Friend of mine at Yoga From the Heart  told me about this.   Actually, she gave me some of hers because A - she is kind & generous or B - I am such a mooch.  {Pick one and don't tell me which way you went with it.}

I've been putting it in everything. My plain yogurt, my smoothies, my waffle batter, my ice cream.....whoaaaa, nelly. 


Just like our little ditty we started our morning with (that is now firmly implanted in your brain thanks to me) sometimes quick, simple and uplifting are your best go-tos. In this case, trust me - for all you green naysayers, don't be put off by the color. Frozen banana & cocoa make this feel like a milkshake in your mouth. For breakfast!  

For added portability I am loving my sippy cup lids.  

Driving down the road this morning I swear I almost made a Big Hair have to fix her make-up when her face got all scrunched up into the "Ewww,  bless her pea pickin' heart, but what in THEE Sam hell is that little girl DUH-RINKIN???"

Why Hump Day is making me happy...

Well it sure as heck isn't because  SURVIVOR starts today because nooooo, that's next week.  I don't want to turn this into an As The Island Turns post but....Colton? Seriously, he makes me want to toss his little pink bermudas into the deep end. Just sayin'....


Hump Day is makin me happy today because of BLING and new websites I found.   A few tips to try:

  1.  Feet Bling. Wear some punchy socks today. New socks make your toes wanna runnnn.
  2. Drink 8 glasses of water. (Add some drops of Wild Orange or Grapefruit essential oil to keep the Bling in your water!) 
  3. Wear this Lip Bling during workouts. And visit my friend in Highland Village to gitchu some. 
  4. This Brown Shugga Scrub over on Etsy. All the cells in your body are thanking you right about now. 
  5. My favorite shampoo evah. Strangers sniff me. It smells that good. 

Okay, grasshoppers, you're all set with some new Bling.  

Visit my friends and tell 'em I said 'hey'.

Then we can all be friends and sit at the same lunch table.  

and wear matching socks.
